The preview in Photomatix sucks. There is a reason for this but I  
won't bore you with the details.

I almost always use the default tone mapping settings in Photomatix  
and then make any necessary corrections in my photo processing app.

I also mostly use the batch mode because I can't be bothered with all  
the mouse clicks. Especially if I have a couple of dozen images to  
process.

The perfectionists here will be horrified but I'm happy with the  
results.
