To come back to the original topic of this thread: In this a recent
interview <http://tinyurl.com/2ewrnh>, Adobe's Kevin Connor explains
the SDK challenge for Lightroom:

----------------------------------------------------------------
A Lightroom SDK is thornier than one for Photoshop because the latter
can accept a filter that permanently changes an image, Connor said.
Image-processing plug-ins are "trickier in Lightroom because it's
nondestructive," and filters must be applied and reapplied in real
time as new adjustments are made.
----------------------------------------------------------------

As I understand it, this means a tone mapping method that operates locally
would not really be possible in Lightroom, given that a local operator is
usually non-reversible, but I may be wrong.

The article also mentions HDR support in Lightroom, though not much
more than that.
