Toni & Mike -- If you select a default output bit depth of 16-bit in 
Photomatix View > Default Options > Tone Mapping, then TIFF will be the 
default save file type as well. JPEG defaults when you are using 8-bit 
output.

I don't know what kind of workflow you are applying after saving your 
tone mapped files. However if you're saving as TIFF, that implies to me 
that you're doing at least some amount of further post-processing in 
Photoshop or whatever. In that case you may benefit from saving 16-bit 
from Photomatix, and only convert down to 8-bit after all processing is 
complete. In particular this may preserve more levels of detail in the 
shadow tones of your tone mapped image, which you may find useful during 
any later tonal adjustments and so on...
