While I haven't tried the hdk5 one yet (I don't have access to my A620
during the next 3 weeks), I have tried the older RAW hack, which works with
the same principle.
It does not overwrite the firmware, even though you need to use the "update
firmware" function. When the camera tries to execute the firmware update,
the hack takes over and installs some new functions in the camera RAM. These
are then lost when the camera is switched off.
So you have to repeat the procedure on every power on.
