John:

Welcome to the weird science of HDR.

There are really only guidelines, not hard and fast rules.

I've gotten great images with as little as two or three images
bracketed over a large range, and had other images that only looked
awesome with like 7 or 9 exposures.

Leaving one out may have little impact, or it might produce a less
than satisfying images. Experimentation is the key.

In my new eBook (http://www.oreilly.com) (it should be available later
this afternoon/tonight at that link) I talk about a number of ways to
generate tons of LDR source images, with the thinking that it is
better to have too many than not enough source images.

It's at a high-level, and I don't deepdive into the math and science
too deeply. It's more a crash course and walkthrough of PSCS2,
Photomatix and FDRTools workflows geared not to this listserve core
audience, but more to the HDR newbie, but hopefully there are some
valuable insights for HDR users at all levels.
