Too much maintenance and you'd have to go subscribe to posts to be
notified. Personally, I prefer email because I can just get emails
about any topic at any time and I use filters to throw the emails in
folders so I can go look at them when I need to. A forum is way
impersonal and much harder to have a conversation in. There is
something a lot more instantaneous about email as well.
I think it would be a shame to split the group.
